2011/2012 Colorado Fusion Soccer Club Board of Directors
Andy Olree, Board President: Andy was elected to the Board in 2009. His second term expires in September, 2012. Andy has been coaching with Fusion and Denver Soccer for over 8 years. He has 5 children. His eldest son plays on a U13 team, and his daughter is on the U12 competitive team. He currently coach’s his son’s U9 team and his other son’s U6 team. He is a USSF E-licensed coach. Andy grew up in St. Louis and began playing organized soccer at age 8, has played for over 30 years, and continues to play in Men’s leagues in Colorado. Andy owns a mid-sized architecture firm called Design Edge.
Shane Orr, Vice-President: Shane was elected to the board in 2010. His second term expires in September 2013. Shane's son Christian currently plays U7, and his daughter Addison will soon be playing U5. Shane grew up playing soccer in Summit County and continues to play in Men's leagues in Colorado. He is a partner with the law firm of Husch Blackwell LLC where his legal practice includes a variety of complex real estate development and transactional matters. Shane has an undergraduate degree in biology from the University of Colorado at Boulder and a law degree from The Catholic University of America, Columbus School of Law.
Scott Garber, Secretary: Scott was elected to the board in 2009. His second term on the board expires in September, 2012. Scott’s son Bryce plays on the U11 squad. Scott played competitive youth soccer and for a year at Dartmouth College, until his playing career was cut short by injury. He is a USSF certified Grade 8 soccer official and has refereed matches ranging from U9 recreational through competitive adult matches in the Colorado Rapids Adult Soccer League. He has also coached U10 boys in basic goalkeeping as an adjunct to the Predator program. Scott is an Administrative Law Judge with the Colorado Department of Revenue.
Doris Spornberger, Treasurer: Doris was appointed to the Board in June, 2009. Her third term expires in September, 2013. Doris currently has two children who participate in the Club. Her older daughter plays on the competitive side, while her younger child plays on a U11 team in the developmental program. Doris has a degree in accounting and has been a Controller for a number of years. She has volunteered with other nonprofits, and is currently a finance committee member at Stanley British Primary School.
John Babiak: John was elected to the board in 2008. His third term on the board expires in September, 2011. John has a 10-year old son and a 12-year-old daughter playing with Colorado Fusion. He holds a number of coaching licenses and has coached at various levels in the Fusion system. He currently coaches a U11 team. John worked in the biotechnology field for 23 years and possesses a background in business development and marketing. Since his move to Denver in 2003, he coupled his entrepreneurial spirit with his extensive business experience, and initiated his own adjunct educational and summer enrichment through the Denver Public Schools in Stapleton and Hilltop, as well as at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge. He has gained local notoriety for his “Nature Rangers,” “Popular Sciences 4 Kids,” “Kitchen Sciences for Kids,” and “Xtreme Kickball” classes.
Marsha Berzins: Marsha was first elected to the Board in 2009. Her second term on the board expires in September, 2011. Four of Marsha’s five children played either at Aurora Sting or Colorado Fusion, and she presently has a U18 player and U13 player in the Club. She is the Aurora City Council Member representing Ward 3. She also volunteered with the City of Aurora Board of Adjustments and Appeals, the City of Aurora Citizens Advisory Budget Committee, Aurora Community and Housing Board, and Aurora Mental Health Board of Directors. Marsha is a member of the Aurora Business and Professional Women. She and her husband have a small electrical contracting business, and she is also employed part-time by SkyWest airlines.
Evan Borg: Evan was appointed to the board in February 2011. His second term expires in September, 2013. Both of Evan's sons play for Fusion squads and have since they were 4 years old. He has been a volunteer coach with the club since 2005 and is currently coaching one of his son's U9 teams. Evan grew up playing soccer in Colorado, and then enjoyed playing at the collegiate level at Bates College. Evan is the Elementary Principal at Denver Academy, having worked there since 1992 as a teacher, soccer coach and administrator. He holds a MA and an MBA from the University of Denver. This is Evan's first year on our Board.
Tony Jones: Tony was appointed to the board in April 2011. His second term expires in September 2013. After growing up and playing soccer in Colorado, Tony began coaching youth soccer in 1992 in Iowa, before moving back to Colorado in 2001. He has coached many levels of soccer from U-4 to men's open division and is currently an Advanced 2 coach with the Colorado Fusion Soccer Club in Aurora. Tony has three children that have played with the club and his youngest continues to play in our U15 division.
Dan Smink: Dan was elected to the Board in 2009. His second term expires in September, 2012. Dan recently served as the Colorado Fusion’s board President. Dan has two children playing with the Colorado Fusion and helps coach a team. He came to Colorado after finishing his MBA to help lead the strategy and marketing efforts for large healthcare providers such as Centura and multinational medical device companies such as Covidien, McKesson and Thermo Fisher. As chairman of MHCD, a healthcare services company, Dan’s leadership and strategic guidance helped grow the organization from $25 million to $50 million in less than three years, and returned the company to profitability. Prior to going into business, Dan taught middle school and coached soccer for 6 years. Dan has served as the Fusion’s President and as Treasurer.
Chantell Taylor: Chantell Taylor was elected to the board in September 2011. Chantell lives in Stapleton and has two daughters playing with Colorado Fusion, U9 and U6. She has played soccer her whole life, including a competitive European tour in high school, and continues to play on an indoor women’s team. Chantell has applied her skills and passion for soccer to volunteer as a coach for her daughters’ teams. She is an attorney with a diverse background in nonprofit, regulatory and political law. Before her current position as an attorney at Hogan Lovells LLP, she worked at several national law firms, launched and directed a nonprofit government ethics group, and served as in-house general counsel for a national network of nonprofits. In addition to her legal career, Chantell is a certified group fitness instructor and coaches sports conditioning classes throughout Denver.
